Michelle Witkin PhD Michelle Witkin, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Valencia, CA, with more than 30 years experience. She specializes in treating children, teens, and adults with Obsessive-Compulsive-Disorder and anxiety disorders. She volunteers extensively leading support groups for anxiety and OCD sufferers and their loved ones. She has been a featured speaker on podcasts and radio shows including: The OCD Stories, Moms Without Worry, You Are Not Alone, and Tell Me What You're Proud Of. She is a regular presenter at national conferences (including for the International OCD Foundation and the Anxiety and Depression Association of America), and she writes on topics related to anxiety and OCD. Dr. Witkin is a graduate of the International OCD Foundation's General and Pediatric Behavior Therapy Training Institute (BTTI), a faculty member for the International OCD Foundation’s Behavior Therapy Training Institute, and is a Clinical Fellow of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. Dr. Witkin is also trained in Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE).
Learning Objectives:
Objective 1:
Describe three clinical presentations in which psychologists, according to recent research, are highly likely to misdiagnose clients as suicidal or harmful to others rather than having OCD.
Objective 2:
Explain two ways in which misdiagnosis of harm obsessions due to lack of training and cultural bias can lead to inappropriate treatment and a poor clinical prognosis for individuals with OCD.
Objective 3:
Describe two or more ways to improve upon a standard suicide/harm assessment to better distinguish between obsessions and suicidality/harm to others and determine an appropriate clinical action.
Continuing education for post-doctoral psychologists
